Our visit to Minehead really follows my recent post about Dunster Castle, as we went there directly after wards.
Minehead in Somerset, is on the Bristol Channel, just before it opens up into the Atlantic Ocean and starts getting really rough.
Minehead takes me back to when our children were young and we had several family holidays there. A small rather old fashioned town with it's own steam trains and a holiday camp.
The sea goes out quite a long way, all along the Bristol Channel coastline, but the tides are high, rapid and treacherous. Not good for bathing, but the children enjoy the sand.
After Minehead, we visited the lovely little town of Watchet very nearby. This is the lovely little harbour with it's own light house.
I love to see the little boats taking refuge there.
Now here is the *Ancient Mariner* himself, holding his albatross. Do you remember the poem by Coleridge?

And this man...... well I really do not know who he is, but he seemed a friendly sailor. I even had a photograph taken of me sitting on his knee, but you are not seeing that one! Too cheeky!
As usual, the ordinary things in life seem to grab my granddaughter's attention and this little cat was no exception!
Looks like a wonderful place for a vacation. I always want to vacation by the ocean, rarely do, but always want to! Nice pictures!

ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely walkabout!!!! Sigh...I miss GB! The Bristol Channel is so beautiful! I love the statue of the Ancient Mariner...my son read the poem just today for the first time...It is one of my favorites...And the cat is a wonderful bit of everyday to round off a beautiful post!!! ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to live so close to the sea. I am totally landlocked:) Lovely photos; I never imagined the Mariner's albatross as being so big!

ReplyDeleteOh these photos are so winsome. When I see villages like the one you pictured I LONG, maybe even PINE, to know who lives in those houses and what their lives are like. I may be on to why I like blogging so much. I finally get to knock on all these doors and have them opened to me and make friends all over the world. Hmmm....I think this subject is a blog post for me. Time to write. :) Thanks for the LOVELY inspiration.

ReplyDeleteI love the look of those houses in the second picture. They look almost "historic", which is what we call houses here that are more than 100 years old.
ReplyDeleteAnd the third picture (I think) looks like there are some boats out there, but that the water is not deep enough for them. Is that just me? A trick of the eye? Or does that area alternate between having water and NOT having water?

BINA....All round England is tidal. The tides comes in & out twice a day! The sea covers the the whole beach when it comes in & the boats are able to go out to sea & back.
