Stormy Weather.....

Whatever has happened to our May weather?
This is the second year running that the weather has turned cold and blustery during May.
I remember that we have always had warm, sunny days during my Birthday month. The things that stick out in my childhood memories are short sleeved dresses, parties in the garden and endless warm sunshine. I'm sure that wasn't all imagined, was it?
Today is like Winter again, very cold and windy and trying to rain.
I'm hoping that if I leave this post on my blog all week, that things might change ...... you know, Sod's Law and all that. I'm looking at the sky, but it is still as grim as ever.

Today, I've had to wait in for a workman to measure up my bay window for new strong curtain railing. The present curtains are in danger of falling down from an inadequate plastic rail and brittle hooks.  The railing will be moulded to the exact size and shape of the bay and then it will be delivered and fitted and the curtains rehung. I have chosen a well known firm to do the job for me as we are unable to do work like that ourselves anymore. It will be good to have the curtains fixed and be able to pull them with no fear of them coming down on our heads. This is one of several jobs that I am going to have done this year.
I am also trying to clean up the house and clear away clutters. I am constantly ferrying unwanted items to Cancer related Charity shops.
I have been watching programmes on TV about real hoarders who have things piled from floor to ceiling in every room. Some of them can't use the kitchen or bathroom and can only get in and out of the house with great difficulty through narrow gaps in the rubbish and sometimes by climbing over the heaps and stacks of junk that is apparently very precious to the collectors. When I get fed up with what I think are my muddles...... I realise how ordinary they are compared to these hoarders.

A few sunny days would inspire me to tackle the clear up and that is before I start on the garden.
Everything is done in bite sized chunks in this house so as not to aggravate my dodgy back.
I'm now going to put on some warm layers and brave the icy blasts of wind and steady rain..... all for the sake of a bit of exercise that a brisk walk will provide. It helps my back to stay supple, so I've been informed. Maybe I don't do enough!

That's what I remember too. This week, cold and rainy, windy, and the power went out, I think a transformer went so no power or heat when I got up. At least we don't have tornadoes where I live.

In 1976 my son was born on 12th May and the sun never stopped shining until October! I'm sick, sick, sick of this weather, it's ridiculous. I wish there was someone to write to with a complaint, I could put a real stinker of a letter together! I've just checked the weather forecast for this area for tomorrow and Sunday and it's supposed to be nice. We'll see.

we went out this morning to a poetry meeting and stood around talking for a few minutes afterwards before getting into the car. My B. said: can we go, I’m freezing.

Normally he is very polite.

It's not cold here (southeastern U.S.), but we are having cooler weather than we normally do in May. Lots of rain, too. Today is gorgeous, sunshine, high around 70 F. I'd send it along to you if I could. On those days when it rained so much, I couldn't get motivated to do anything.

I'm so sorry about the weather. We were experiencing the same thing here. Yesterday, I was bundled up and cold all day as the sky was cloudy and the rain drizzled. Today, the sun is out and we are warm and happy. I hope it continues to stay like this for a few days.

It's bitter cold here too....I think I missed wishing you a happy birthday! I hope it warms up soon.

We had snow this morning, and below freezing temp all night. Our frost-free date here is May 24th, and so I have not planted anything yet. It is now fining up a bit here and I hope it will do so for you very soon.
Wishing you sun and warmth and a strong new curtain rod!

Hi Maggie,
We have had some summery weather, but just lately it has been cold and showery. But the lilacs are blooming, and the hummingbirds and pine siskins are devouring the food we put out for them, so I put on a sweater and close my mouth!
Blessings to you and your to-do list!

I hope your back fares well by the exercise your walk provides you. I find that it is just moving around in the apartment, and not sitting down in one position for too long, that makes my back feel better. Just don't be lifting anything heavy and don't make sudden turns or twists. xox

My husband has a bit of hoarding problem, but he gets great comfort from watching the TV programs about hoarders because he is not anywhere nearly as bad as they are. He can't figure out why the people hoard garbage. Sort of cold here too in southern Midwest U.S (long-sleeved shirt required) but at least we have gotten much needed rain. Yea!

You have so much to deal with lately. I think you are doing great to be able to see some chores that you can take care of and also to think clearly about what is healthy for you. I can picture you bundling up and setting out on a walk and braving the cold.

Unusually cool here, too. I have een in the garden all day, but it should be sweltering by now.

A physio once told me that there is not really any back problem that is helped by inactivity, so your walk is a good idea Maggie.
There may be warm weather on the way to you, we've had a couple of good days, though the evenings are still cool.
Isn't is a constant job to keep on top of clutter? Thank God for charity shops!

It's been cold and windy here also the past few days. Warmer weather is supposed to be coming soon though. I hope your back is feeling better before too long. A walk is almost always a good choice.

I hope it warms up there soon Maggie. We've been having some rain here in BC but it's much needed after so many weeks of no moisture at all. Sounds like you've been busy! Good work.

The sun is finally here - let's hope it stays as we go away on the motorbike on Friday!

Days are certainly colder and read recently this is the coldest May for 30 years. So it must have been cold 30 years ago and perhaps we didn't feel it because our blood was much thicker then. Mine would be because I have given 98 pints of it away. LOL

At last Maggie, a couple of good days! But don't hold your breath -it will probably be -10C tomorrow! Mad isn't it? Good luck with the curtains. Isn't it frustrating when we can't do these things for ourselves any more?

That feeling of clearing away clutter is continuous for me, with four kids around. But you just have to get on with it, don't you?

Lovely to meet you again online Maggie.

No, you are absolutely right. I remember my grandad always saying "ne're cast a clout till May is out" because I was running round with short sleeves in May. Not this year, we've had to have the heating on, goodness knows what it's costing!

We had a big clear out of daughter's room last summer and planned to sell it at a car boot, but with MIL's illness we didn't. It's still all sitting waiting to go and driving me mad. A hoarder I cannot be!

Weather patterns are changing. I remember school days in May and June as always being hot (here in Canada), but often we have freezing days in springtime. We've actually just come out of a cold and rainy few days - temps dipping precariously close to the freezing mark!
Today, we're back to warmth, however - and I'm glad!

I understand about having people come in to do work. I too am in that position. I've moved house and discovered that there are no towel racks in the bathroom! Now I have to call a handyman to come over and put some up on the wall. Oh and there are so many other little things, David and used to do together. Curtains, I'll try to do later on - have to go out and buy them first.

Hope you get to enjoy your walk. I always feel better after a good walk too.
Hugs

Raining today, but we were lucky in London to have a sunny weekend and bank holiday --- I don't think this was the case everywhere. My poor Mum went on a coach trip yesterday and ended up getting soaked.

Good luck with the tidying and the garden --- a little bit every day is my motto!

The weather really has been something else, world-wide, this spring, hasn't it? This past weekend, the night time temps dropped down into the frost/freezing range -unbelievable, considering it is almost June! Saturday, Sunday and yesterday were beautiful, sunny days, but with a big breeze that made it feel much cooler, I think, than it really was. Last week, the forecast for this week was to be sunshine every day, with temps going into the 80s, even 90s towards the end of the week. Judging by what I see this morning as I look out my window, this was another forecast that was a bust as it is a slow drizzle of cold rain here today! Just the very kind of weather I really dislike as it tends to make my old joints ache more like a bad toothache, almost all the time then! Oh well, I'm sure I'll survive but not without a good bit of grumping and growling about something over which I have absolutely no control whatsoever!

We 've had a strange May, too--not cold, but constant rain that is frustrating my attempts to get some gardening done. Still, we are so fortunate not to have had the terrible tornadoes that have devastated other parts of the country.

I need to de-clutter, too! My children have threatened to refer me to "Hoarders":). But you're right--we're a far cry from the people on that show.

Hope the warm sunny days return for you soon!

NB: I would never, EVER, suggest that someone kill and eat their pet rabbits. Especially someone like you who has cherished those cute little animals and made them part of your family. Likewise, I will never raise guinea pigs to eat. Ever. I probably will never have them as pets as long as I have the Molly-nater and the cat: their main goals in life are to kill small furry animals. I mostly meant that post as a joke.
