The New Pier

Photos Copyright: Maggie May

I expect many people from South West of England/Wales, remember the terrible news of the Weston Super Mare Pier burning down in July 2008.
I went there shortly after the event and managed to get close enough to take this photo.
It was a terrible thing to see.
Not that I could say that piers are that important in my life but I think it was an asset to this seaside town and I had known it since I was a small child when I used to go there on Sunday School outings.

Over the next couple of years, the old pier was dismantled, strengthened and widened.

Progress seemed to be very slow and whenever we visited Weston, we took the occasional photo but thought that it would never get finished.

However, when we revisited a few weeks ago after a very long time without going there, I was able to snap the photo below and think it is a definite improvement.

I could cry seeing that lovely building going up. We lost our pier and it has never been replaced.

Fantastic! (oooh strange - just as I was typing FANTASTIC the word was spoken on The Archers lol) well as I was saying - yes this is a great renovation Maggie.

That looks great. Just like a phoenix rising from the ashes. Was Weston Pier the one owned by Jim Davidson, but he couldn't afford to renovate it? Who paid for the new one?

WM...... The pier is owned by Kerry Michael.

It's beautiful! I would love to stroll down the pier to that building just to peek inside!

I never could resist a pier and love to stroll on them. I like them best at nighttime when they are lighted up. The ones in California always have a good fish restaurant on them.

What a lovely new pier Maggie, great photo. I do hate when fire destroys historical piers and buildings and it makes me happy when I see everything replaces..Hugs

The new one is WONDERFUL! I have been sad, too, for lovely landmarks gone up in flames.

I hope all is well with you. I haven't been by in awhile to see you. Glad I I did today! I hope you have a good week.

Oh it is lovely to see a photo of the replacement, it was so sad when that happened.

Thanks so much for your comments by the way, sorry about the dream lol!

It looks great Maggie - I have not been to see it yet butI will. Very strange because I used to drive an ambulance with six patients there three times a week for 3 years but when I retired from ambulance work I have not been there since. On the day the pier burnt down I saw the plume of smoke miles away as I approached and had a shock when I saw the mass of twisted metal. It had stood there since 1905.

What a shame to have lost the original. I seem to recall a couple of people posting about this pier in the past. Glad to see that it's coming around again.

I went on it a few weeks ago with me oldest friend - I thought it was really lovely, and the chish n fips we had were pretty scrummy too, but then chips always taste best by the sea!
