Crochet and Hospital Visits

Photo Copyright: Maggie May

Harry and I have just come back from his hospital appointment to discuss the recent bone scan that he had.
Unfortunately he now has cancer in the spine which is very painful and that is why he has had such a rough time of it recently.
He has to have some radiation treatment soon to help the pain and then he will have to start chemotherapy for up to ten months.
However before that commences, he will need an MRI scan to highlight the problem.
On top of that, he has to have a monthly intravenous drip of something to try to strengthen his bones.

We will just have to take one day at a time. The cancer cannot be cured but hopefully will halt the progress for a while. I hope so considering what is ahead of him.

While Harry has been unwell, I have been doing crochet to take my mind of things.
Although I have made crochet blankets in the past, I was inspired by another blogger who I have recently started to visit because of her name initially and then because I liked her blog. She is another Maggie and her blog is called Mrs runof themills Blogspot .
I was recently drawn to some crochet work that she did and decided to do something similar. Hope you don't mind, Maggie if you are reading this.
She posted several weeks ago and took photos of her lovely blankets.

I daresay, the blanket will be the first of many because crocheting doesn't hurt my wrists and hands as much as knitting does.

It is unbelievable what you are having to go through at the moment. I hope that you can both stay strong and be positive. I am pleased that you have found something to take you mind off the problem, if that is possible.

I'm sorry, Maggie, that Harry (and you!) have to go through this! May God strengthen and comfort you both, and give you peace in the midst of the trial.

The crochet squares are beautiful!

I'm real sorry to hear about Harry's diagnosis, Maggie. That sounds quite serious. I hope the treatments help him some and make it easier for him to move around and be comfortable.

I am so sorry for Harry. Cancer is awful and I can only imagine what both of you face in the coming weeks and months. Sending you lots of hugs and prayers.

Baby steps as we say. That's the only way to get through.

I am so glad you are crocheting! I too love crocheting and much prefer that to knitting.

Keep us posted on your work. Your squares are beautiful. I've only done doll blankets and a baby blanket. Oh and some more doll clothes (they're smaller), but one day I hope to make a proper quilt or afgan or bed spread.

I'm so sorry to hear of your husband's diagnosis. You are really dealing with a great deal. I think it's wonderful that you are keeping yourself busy making all those beautiful, colorful squares. I think that crocheting is a wonderful way of dealing with emotions.

Sad. And scary. When my mother was very ill, I knit things. Standing beside her bed with the yarn in my pocket, needles clicking. And it does help.
I hope everything goes as well as can be for your husband and for you. And the crochet looks amazing.
Sending virtual hugs - and wishing there was something more.

What a rotten break for Harry! I hope the treatments do help alleviate the spread and pain from the cancer as much as is possible. Not an easy road ahead for either of you, is it?
But, the crochet -well, I look at that as the same as me and my embroidery -helps take your mind off things that otherwise would probably have you doing nothing but worrying and fidgeting on a constant basis. Crafts like that are great therapy and excellent for clearing the mind and actually relaxing for a change. Prayers for both you and Harry!

Maggie,
I am so pleased that my blankets inspired you and are helping. I just feel so for you both, this is a really difficult time for you both, but the love and support you have from friends in blogland will hopefully help as well as other support you get. Writing can be a great therapy too, have you thought of keeping a journal, recording your thoughts and so on, a place to deposit those negative feelings? Maybe you don't feel like it all the time, but your bravery in coping with all you have going on is inspiring.
Sending best wishes to you both.

My sympathy goes out to you and your husband, along with all best healing vibes its possible for me to send. Your crochet sqares are like a bouquet of flowers, and I know how addictive they can be, as I've been hooked (pardon the pun) on such things for years! :)

Maggie, I am so sorry to hear of Harry's diagnosis. I do hope that the treatment can ease his pain. I'm at a loss for words this morning, but please know that I will keep the two of you in my thoughts and prayers.

My mother is a quilter, but she also crochets a lot. She always has some kind of handwork with her any time she has to sit somewhere and wait for awhile. Her crocheting helped her get through all the long hours sitting at my Dad's bedside when he was in the hospital last year. I hope it helps you relax during the long days ahead, too.

Dear Maggie and Harry,

If good thoughts count as prayers, then I am certainly making a grand appeal to the Creator to see you through this!

I am visualizing the blanket you are making as a shield against pain. Let it comfort and warm you both.

There is nothing I can say to make you feel any better. I would know I have heard them all. I will say what you always say... Take it easy! One day at a time is what you have in front of you. It is never as bad as it seems and love is everywhere.
I have been meaning to stop by to thank you for all the wonderful comments. Thanks. Give my best to Harry.

Dearest Maggie -this is the saddest of news. Would that all our prayers could eradicate cancer - but I don't think it can. All we can do is offer our love and support and wish both you and Harry the strength to keep going in the months ahead. I just hope the medical practitioners do as much as possible to control his pain. I hate to think of his suffering physically.

A big hug to you from the San Francisco area, Maggie May.

(Wish I could remember how to crotchet, my Granny taught me when I was small)
