Memorial in the Park

Photo copyright: Maggie May

There is a small place in our local park that has a remembrance plaque for three men, out of a crew of six, who crashed their plane there, during World War Two. There is a full explanation here.
I have walked through the park on many occasions but think the memorial has only been there for a year or so and I took some photos of it earlier, in the spring.
As we will be remembering all the men who died during the First and Second World Wars and all the men and women who have died because of recent wars, by a two minute silence on Sunday in Church, I thought it would be fitting to post about this crash in the park during World War Two, that happened before I ever moved to Bristol.
It is because of men and women like these that we are free to express ourselves today. Life ( if we would have been spared), would have been so different if we hadn't won the Second World War. We really do need to reflect on this.

So true Maggie! The brave men and women who gave their lives on our behalf humbles me. And those serving today, I salute them and thank them with all my heart.

What a special memorial, it is a beautiful piece of Stone. While our main memorial day is ANZAC Day - in April - there were ceremonies here today at 11.00am (of course).

I am so very fortunate - my Great Uncle Thomas served in WWI and Great Uncles Walter and Fred in WWII; all came back to their families. I had the pleasure of knowing my Uncles Walter and Fred, and of meeting Uncle Thomas (at his little sister's, my Grandma's, 50th wedding anniversary celebrations). I know even more from my parents'talking about them.

Sending care and many huggles to you and Harry and your 2 little furry, fluffy friends,

memorials are fine, but we need a living reminder of what war costs in terms of lives ,families and consequences. I dont agree with war, but recognise if attacked we have to defend.
The wars our troops are involved in at present are not that and the human and finacial costs are too high - bring them home.

Nice job with the photos, Maggie.

I remember hearing about this (though didn't remember the location, exactly). I can well understand how it would have reduced morale greatly. Too bad the story didn't come out immediately after the war.

The world would be a scary place if things had turned out differently.

I am ashamed that we only honour all those who gave everything once a year. We can't ever forget!

May we never forget. Lovely tribute, Maggie.

It makes a pleasant change to see a memorial in the sun. At this time of the year the weather is usually so dismal.

We owe them all so much.

Oh, Maggie, I hate to even think what life would be like had things ended differently in WWII. Our Armed Forces served us well and continue to do so.

Sorry I've been absent. I've been really ill for about ten days...and spent a few days in the hospital. Finally home on Tuesday. Check out my "H" is for Hospitals" poem today. You can probably relate to it! I tried to make it funny.

It's humbling to think of their service isn't it Maggie? I will be attending a Rememberance Day Parade on Sunday. We must never, never forget.

I think it is really important to remember. So many people have given and continue to give so much. They should never be forgotten.

We also celebrated Veterans' Day yesterday. We should never forget those who sacrificed their own lives so that we could enjoy the freedoms we do today.

Every year I think that thanks are just not enough somehow. We owe so much to so many brave men and women who lost their lives.

Lovely post Maggie.

I agree that we must remember those who served and honor their service, even when we disagree with the reasons for the conflict. Standing for what you believe is right is honorable.

We need to think and remember and then find a way to make sure it doesn't happen time and time again.

That was a lovely post, Maggie. They all deserve the deepest respect and individual memorials for each.

We'd certainly live in a different world, wouldn't we, Maggie?

It really doesn't bear thinking about what might have happened, does it Maggie. We watched the Festival of Remembrance last night on tv - always so moving - all those petals! A
