Do You Believe In Miracles?

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

It wasn't long ago that I wrote a post The Empty Box explaining that I had been presented by our city council with a voucher that was worth a good deal of money because of my long service working for them.
I had bought a gold bracelet, worth far more than I would ever be able to afford normally.
I explained my horror of finding it gone from my wrist and not knowing where or when I had lost it. I wrote about the possibilities of who would have found it and what they might be thinking.
I told about all the hard work I had done in the special school where I had worked for years lifting heavy children and spoiling my back. Of all the s**t I had cleaned up over the years and then all the crates of sandwich boxes that I had lifted, causing further back injury and all the freezing days I have worked in the playground all for nothing! I wrote that I doubted that I would ever get the bracelet back and that I had come to the conclusion that it was only a material thing that was not worth fretting over. I had never had it before and hadn't got it now. I was resigned to that fact. It had been lost for over four months before I felt I could post about it.

Well. Do you believe in miracles?
Just before Christmas, I searched a small top drawer in a chest in my bedroom. I was actually looking for something else. I saw a small flash of gold. I pulled out my bracelet. I was dumbfounded. The bracelet was fastened, so I must have taken it off. I definitely knew that I wouldn't have put it in that drawer though. I usually either kept the bracelet on or kept it in its box in a locked cabinet.
After careful reflection, I realized that I had on occasion put it on top of that chest of drawers while I had a shower. The drawer must have been partly open and something must have knocked it into the drawer. The most likely explanation must be that my dressing gown that is kept on a hook on the door very near to the chest, must have been taken down, swooshing against the top of the chest of drawers and knocking the bracelet inside, unknown to me. The drawer must have been shut later and the bracelet forgotten about. Either that or.......... I must be going stark raving mad!

I do remember that post and felt sad for your loss. That's so great that it turned up! Brilliant!

Am so pleased it has turned up!! :)

What a relief that you found the bracelet! Odd how these things happen, sometimes.

I lose things more and more, these days. Unfortunately, I simply can't remember where I've put them. Of course, if I cleared out my cupboards, everything would be easier to find - but I'd rather be blogging!

I'm sure you'll enjoy it even more second time around.
And miracles? Definitely. My heart sank when after a long day out I noticed a diamond had disappeared from my engagement ring. I tried to put it in perspective by reminding myself that having my husband was of vastly greater significance. But, with no chance of re-tracing my steps, I did search the car then carefully swept the kitchen floor...and there it was!

Oh Maggie so pleased you found it - you will treasure it even more now, I'm sure.

What a huge relief. How wonderful, almost like being gifted twice.

I am so happy that you found the bracelet! I remember feeling so bad for you after your earlier post when it had disappeared.

This is one benefit to cleaning, I've found (maybe the only one)--I often find something that I thought I'd lost forever:)

That's fab Maggie!! I remember your post about this and it was sad! Isn't it funny, sometimes, how things turn out? I'm so pleased you have it to wear again :)

Maybe you have some playful spirit in your house who is playing games with you! X

It is true that some things can only be explained as miraculous-I too lost a large diamond from a ring I was wearing in the car coming back to England from the south of France. We had made a number of stops including one over night befre I realised the stone was and to search anywhere in the car seemed pointless, but we did, without success. On arrival back home I was clearing out the space in the footwell on the passengers side, all the detritus that collects after a long journey, bits of paper and sandwich boxes, motorway tickets etc. And there, amongst the bits of gravel and dirt picked up from our to-ing and fro-ing, sparkled my diamond. Miracle or serendipity? Well, JP was standing by with the vacuum and would have had that little beauty a minute later.

I have been there, done that so I do know that incredible feeling of relief you felt! Now if I could only find the missing earring...I know I left it on my nightstand...I do believe in miracles! Take care.

Ah, what a great find! That must mean you will have a very good year! It is amazing how we get so attached to material things though! :D Perhaps there was a lesson in this for you?!

Yay! It turned back up! I love it when that happens.

I think the happiness you probably experienced on finding that bracelet would be akin to the joy I feel if I stick my hand in the pocket of a jacket or coat I havn't worn in a long while and find a some cash in there that I had forgotten all about! How anyone can forget that they have a $10 or $20 dollar bill stuck in a pocket sometimes still amazes me -it's rare that I have much cash around -but anyway, sure is a pleasant surprise when I find a little extra that way.

Oh, I am pleased for you, I hate it when things go missing (even when it's just socks - I swear this house eats socks!)

I hope you wore it proudly during the Christmas season Maggie and that every time you take it off it goes into the proper box now.

Just catching up and thinking of you....

I recall that post, Maggie. My mother would have enjoyed this narration.

Sorry I've been a slow starter this year - blame it on the west coast trip.

It is a miracle ... lots of things are. Rainbows and big, heavy planes taking off like birds. I know there is often a scientific explanation ... but who cares?

OvaGirl said...

that's great news Maggie. It's always a very interesting moment, when you lose something and despite deep disappointment can reconcile yourself to the loss and then! it turns up out of the blue. I am also very impressed with your detective skills!

Mean Mum........ I suppose clearing up the mess might be the answer. Funny how I didn't go into that drawer for 4 months!

SMS & Moannie...... you both lost diamonds from rings (like I did once) and found them! That is even more incredible as the stones are so tiny. However they do sparkle!

Violet Sky & Suburbia, Tiaras & tantrums, Riverpoet & Debra...... you have all expressed relief and pleasure that the bracelet was found...... thank you.

Rose..... yes, one benefit of cleaning..... I should do it more often!

I can empathise. I lost a pair of gold bracelets, made from a big chunk of yukon gold. It was my late father-in-law's nuggets. I never told my ex-husband. I miss them terribly as I adored my F-I-L!
