Construction On The Beach

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

Weston Super Mare, such a grand name isn't it? However, if you went there right now you might be disappointed. Not only has the pier been burnt down, but the sea defenses are under new construction. Much of the town is low lying and during high tides, shops and homes are in danger of flooding.

For most of the summer there were cranes on the sea front and I took some great pictures of them. It was very interesting to watch these giants picking up large, heavy equipment.

There was a kind of beauty in all this heavy machinery and I was snapping away quite happily, much to the amusement of my long suffering husband. He ought not to be surprised by now that I always take my camera and a notebook and pen with me when ever I have a day out. There is usually some very good blog material on such a trip.

Don't you just love this crane and the rust tinged chain?

This photo reminds me of Little and Large! Remember the comedians?
When these alterations are completed by the end of the year, Weston will be a great place to visit. The pier will take a little while longer to rebuild but there are plans for a really good building to replace the old one.
It is amazing when we go back after a long time and see the way that the work is coming on and what seems like pointless digging and heaving about, suddenly becomes part of a new structure that looks really good. While visiting we have stood for ages just watching all the men at work. This seemed more interesting than anything else, at the time.
Can't wait for it all to be finished. I dare say I will be posting photos...........

Will they next be working on your kitchen floor? Any rats wouldn't have a chance!

Great photos, a really impressive sight.

Is that the pier that Jim Davidson bought, but couldn't restore due to astronomical costs? Saw a programme about it. Would be good to see the new one.

You do make the construction site look beautiful.

Great photos! I am always amazed by construction work in progress. It always looks like confusion reigns, but you know that someone, somewhere, is directing all of the work and knows exactly what is going on!

It must be very satisfying for everyone concerned in such a project, to see what they've achieved, when their work is completed.

Hi ~ I have to be honest I never really stop and look at construction equipment or see it as a photo opportunity - yet you did and it was very well done! I like the photo of 'Little and Large' - thank you for making me stop and realize that I need to look at the world through a different lens! :) And I bet there are many a young boy who would love to see these pictures of heavy machinery!

I had the same thoughts in my mind as Deb had... you have taken some excellent shots for the PSF! I may stop at the next construction site remembering your post.

Maggie, you see beauty in the most unusual things and make them look interesting. Large machinery is almost a form f abstract art, isn't it, if we didn't know what its purpose was. I am curious about the pier, so please keep us updated on that. A good beach needs a good pier.

I've never been to Weston super Mare but my grandma used to go for holidays quite often. I wonder what she would say if she saw it now.

I can't say that I've considered a construction site as a photo option.. but you sure have found beauty in this one. Well done and will be watching for more. :)

Great photos, Maggie May, especially the close-up of the crane with its chain. I know what you mean about watching construction. When our school added a new addition a few years ago, the workmen were right outside my window for months. For the longest time it seemed all they did was move dirt around:)

I finally had a some time to read your short story from earlier in the week--great job!

Interesting shots on the construction! I'm sure it will be great once it's finished.

Maggie, yes, I do see the beauty in all of this big machinery. I do love that crane and the rust tinged chain! Especially against that beautiful blue sky.

Oh Maggie....I'm so glad you found beauty in all this. I find sadness, which I know is silly, but just me. I believe the ocean is so very beautiful and majestic, I don't like to see this machinery in the view. I guess, in a way, it frightens me. That's why it's good to see things through the eyes of talented women like you!

Hi Maggie!
Wonderful photos! I too think there is something beautiful in all that heavy machinery and construction, even though during the process everything else looks so unfinished...
I daresay once it is all finished everything will look so new and beautiful again and I can't wait to see your next series of photos!

Yes, I think there are some very artistic colours and angles in these photos especially the 'crane and the rust tinged chain' one.

I can remember when it was just donkeys and people on the beach!
