My Herb Garden

Photo Copyright: Maggie May

As you all know, my garden is very small and I tend to cram in everything that I can, which gives it a cluttered look.
I have recently given up quite a chunk of patio in order to grow some herbs in pots.
It is good to add a few fresh herbs to a salad and I have several different varieties of parsley, coriander, sage, fennel, mint, rosemary and thyme.
Coriander is a lovely little herb that livens up a cheese sandwich. I'm sure it is meant to go into a curry though.
My rabbits love fennel and rosemary best.

What herbs are your favourites and what do you use them for?

Every view of your garden is delicious!

My faves are basil and chives.

I have a big pot of chives just about to bloom...they look so pretty right now!

I don't have any fresh herbs growing here -maybe I should give that a try someday? But of the bottled stuff, I suppose my favorites, depending on what I am cooking -would be basil, oregano and celery seed. Along with just about every seasoning known to mankind and sold in the spice departments of the grocery store! LOL

Basil, chives, thyme and rosemary. Lost my 10 year old rosemary in the harsh of the winter this year. I used to stuff it into chickens I was roasting. My chives are doing really well and I let them blossom. They have several yummy purple flowers on them that I chop up into salad and sandwiches.

I do love fresh herbs... especially basil and rosemary.

Having only a balcony to grow my herbs, I also have several pots ready for the planting this week. I'm not a fan of mint or fennel, but I do love dill - great with eggs and salmon.

Your herb garden is very nice. I am just starting to grow herbs. I like thyme, basil, cilantro, and chives. Rosemary is nice also, but does not come back every year and must be replanted in our climate. I have never been successful in keeping it alive and well in the house.

Your patio looks lovely with your potted herbs. I have herbs growing too - parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, basil and I also have a bay tree. :)

You have a fantastic herb garden there. I've still got chives and used to have mint and basil but I do need to spend a bit more time putting a proper herb garden together. Another thing to add to my to do list, but a fun one!

I love your garden! I need to learn how to pot in planters. You're amazing with those green thumbs.

It doesn't matter how small a garden is, there's always room for some potted herbs. I love fresh mint in new potatoes, rosemary with lamb. I also love the flatleaf parsley which is common here...wonderful with almost everything.

Your garden may be small but it's lovely all the same. I must do something about finding a place in my wild jungle to grow some herbs. Perhaps hanging baskets on the fence would be the way to go (so that the weeds don't suffocate them!)

You have quite a variety already. I'm waiting for warmer temps to add basil, my favorite summer herb. I grow mint, parsley, chives, dill, fennel and sage on a regular basis, usually through winter. I use basil to make pesto which I freeze in tiny jars for winter feasting.

Wow, look at that fennel! I have to confess I grow a few herbs, but rarely use them in cooking. I just like the looks and the fragrance:) I do grow fennel every year, though--the swallowtail caterpillars love it. Sometimes I have parsley, too, which I share with my granddaughter's guinea pig.

How lovely - I love herb gardens, herbs in pots are the only things I have ever had much success with - plus they are easy to keep under control than a full garden!

I wish I could take such good photos of my pots

I love coriander and apply it liberally to everything; also basil with tomatoes and thyme, which is nice on roasted vegetables and potatoes.

I am hoping to have a little herb patch in my new garden. Someone has given me some coriander in a pot which I have managed to keep alive for a few weeks now! It is good with curry, also in carrot soup! I will try it in a cheese sandwich next time I make one though!

Aaah that looks lovely! I like basil, in tomato pasta sauces. You have inspired me to grow a herb garden in the half term holiday. I mean, get one started anyway.

Don't you just love the smell of an herb garden? I have a lot of things planted. Basil is my favorite, but I also use oregano, rosemary and parsley frequently. Other herbs on my deck are thyme, sage, dill and chives.

Coriander in a cheese sandwich--I want to try that!

I love cilantro. Its taste is so fresh. It's great in salsa fresca, or chopped and sprinkled atop black bean soup.

I do love coriander, ooh and basil, but then chives, rosemary and thyme are good too!! Love herbs! Oooh and the fragrant waft I get from my mint...

Herbs aren't something I tend to use. I'm a very plain cook and eater. A good friend of ours has a magnificent garden where she grows just about everything. She's totally self-sufficient and every time we go, she sends us home with a basket of all sorts that we never use!!

Cluttered is so much better than bare. Your herb garden is perfect.
My pots are on the big window sill in the front room. Still way too cold to have them outside yet. I know what you mean, fresh herbs make even the simplest dish zingy.

I love the crammed look of your mini garden! It stands out from the rest of your whole garden. Is it really placed there, like in the middle? Yes, I must agree that herbs enhance the food’s flavor. Do consider using herbs in your recipes as the first step in switching to healthy eating habits, and it will help you have a healthier body.
